Video: Transgender Athlete Invited to Compete in Women’s Boxing at the Olympics – Here’s an Example of What Comes Next, Women Worldwide Express Fury
A heated debate has erupted in Paris after it was revealed that Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan, two boxers previously banned from the Women’s World Boxing Championships for being deemed biologically male, have been cleared to compete in the upcoming Olympics as women.
The controversy began when Khelif and Yu-Ting were disqualified from the Women’s World Boxing Championships in March 2023 in New Delhi following a series of DNA tests that raised questions about their biological sex. The tests, ordered amid concerns over the sex of some competitors, reportedly showed that the athletes had ‘XY chromosomes’, according to Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association (IBA). Kremlev claimed the tests exposed athletes “trying to fool their colleagues and pretend to be women.”
However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has since stripped the IBA of the right to run Olympic boxing competitions over governance concerns. The IOC has deemed all athletes, including Khelif and Yu-Ting, eligible to compete under its more relaxed current rules.
Northern Ireland boxing legend Barry McGuigan described the situation as “shocking” on X, while a former Olympian warned that the ongoing gender ideology debate “will get women KILLED.”
The Algerian Olympic Committee responded to the initial disqualification by alleging it was part of a “conspiracy” to prevent them from winning a gold medal, citing “medical reasons” behind the high testosterone levels of their athlete.
Brianda Tamara, a boxer from Mexico, shared her experience of fighting Khelif at the New Delhi tournament. “When I fought with her I felt very out of my depth,” she wrote on X. “Her blows hurt me a lot; I don’t think I had ever felt like that in my 13 years as a boxer, nor in my sparring with men. Thank God that day I got out of the ring safely, and it’s good that they finally realized.”
Watch the video below:
Khelif, a welterweight, is set to fight Italy’s Angela Carini on Thursday, while Yu-Ting, a featherweight, will compete on Friday. Both athletes are reportedly impacted by a Difference of Sexual Development (DSD), a series of medical conditions identified at birth where genitalia is atypical in relation to chromosomes, according to feminist website Reduxx.
The IOC stands by its decision, asserting that both athletes meet the eligibility criteria and will be allowed to compete in the upcoming matches.
The decision has sparked significant debate about the fairness and safety of allowing athletes with such conditions to compete in women’s sports.
Men punching women is now officially an Olympic sport’.
An IOC spokesperson said: ‘All athletes participating in the boxing tournament comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations, in accordance with the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit.’
