Leonardo DiCaprio: Donald Trump ‘Should Not Hold Public Office’

Over the weekend, Leonardo DiCaprio attended the South By South Lawn (SXSL) festival at the White House. This was the inaugural year for the festival and it was designed to gather innovators together to discuss the issues facing our nation, including poverty and climate change. It’s no secret that the actor leans left, and he made his opinions on the newly elected president very, very clear.

Referencing Trump’s claims that climate change is not real, he said, “The scientific consensus is in and the argument is over. If you do not believe in climate change, you do not believe in facts or in science or empirical truths and therefore, in my humble opinion, should not be allowed to hold public office.”

Before a screening of his film Before the Flood, he led a climate change panel. The film will be released on October 21, just before the 2016 election. He hopes the film will make people more aware of climate change and hopes it will sway their votes away from Trump.

In the film, DiCaprio travels the world, including trips to China, Greenland, India and the Arctic and talks to people affected by climate change. If it’s effective, the movie will appeal to its audience’s emotions on the topic, and be a call to action for all of us. At the very least, it should serve to make us think.

When he was asked how did he feel when Trump won the election he gave a mixed response.

He kind of laughed and said it was definitely a shock,”
