In the aftermath of President Joe Biden’s widely criticized debate performance against Donald Trump, Democratic donors and insiders are increasingly frustrated with First Lady Jill Biden for not advising her husband to step down from the 2024 presidential race.

Following Thursday night’s debate, where Biden stumbled over his words and lost his train of thought multiple times, a growing number of Democrats are openly calling for the presumed Democratic nominee to be replaced. However, Jill Biden, 73, is reportedly the most vocal advocate for President Biden, 81, to continue his re-election bid. According to hedge fund manager and market expert Dougie Kass, she remains insistent on his candidacy.

NBC News reported that Biden is set to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with his family at Camp David on Sunday. Sources indicate that the president will ultimately heed the advice of his wife of almost 50 years. “The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady,” a person familiar with the matter told NBC. “If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course.”

This comes after Biden spent seven days at Camp David with advisers preparing for the debate, only to return following his underwhelming performance.

First Lady Jill Biden faced mockery on Friday for her remarks at a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she claimed her husband did extremely well in the debate and “answered all the questions.” Critics, including some Republicans, have gone so far as to accuse Jill Biden of “elder abuse.” Representative Harriet Hageman (R-Wy.) criticized her for “rolling President Biden out on stage to engage in a battle of wits while unarmed.”

Privately, Jill Biden reportedly believes the president’s debate performance was just a “bad night,” according to The New York Times. Following the debate and subsequent calls for Biden to step aside, NYT columnist Maureen Dowd predicted that Jill Biden and White House staff would “build their protective wall ever higher and shoo away reporters.”

Despite these internal tensions, top Democratic Party leaders, including former President Barack Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, continue to publicly support Biden. However, reports suggest a different sentiment behind the scenes. Biden has already had crisis talks with Obama and his former White House Chief of Staff after the debate.

The president’s shaky performance has also impacted fundraising efforts. Some donors skipped a $250,000-per-head Hamptons fundraiser at hedge fund manager Barry Rosenstein’s 18-acre beach estate this weekend. One donor told the New York Post, “Lots of people are blaming his wife… for not telling him [to step aside].”

As Biden faces increasing pressure from within his party, the coming days will be critical in determining the future of his re-election campaign and whether Jill Biden’s steadfast support will be enough to sustain his bid for another term.
