Sadly, we are all forged with challenges in life. With each challenge, we grow mentally and emotionally. And the strong ones are those who have been through the storms and survived.
Unfortunately, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ben Carson shared some terrible news on his Facebook profile, revealing that his mother, Sonya Carson, had passed away this Tuesday evening. Sonya had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2011.
Despite the great sadness that Carson is in, he didn’t let his emotions stand in his way and posted a tribute to his mother on Facebook, who he always referred to as his biggest inspiration.
In his post, he started out by breaking down the news of losing his mother, and explaining how despite her coming from an “impoverished background with very little formal education, she somehow understood how success was achieved in our society.” Carson explained that when he or his brother tried to make an excuse for something that happened, his mom would quote the poem “Yourself to Blame,” by Mayme White Miller
Whenever I’ve heard Ben Carson speak on his life, he has often mentioned his mother and the wonderful person she was. In the midst of their poverty, she taught him to work hard and be responsible.
His mother, Sonya, raised Carson and his brother on her own and often worked multiple jobs just to fulfill their basic necessities. However, when she saw her sons were at risk of falling behind, she forced them to read two books a week and provide her with written reports.
A Mothers love is so special. I have great love and respect for Dr. Ben Carson and deep gratitude for his mother. Sounds like he had a wonderful mother and role model! Our thoughts and prayers are with Ben Carson and his family during this devastating times.
