KCBD reported when officers arrived, Martinez refused to cooperate with officers. When officers asked him to step out of his vehicle so that they could speak with him, he tried to drive off. Officers grabbed Martinez and drive stunned him with a Taser. While officers were fighting with Martinez, one of the officers was able to grab a small child from the front seat and pull him out just as Martinez was able to put his car into reverse, hitting the officers who were in the doorways.
Martinez put the SUV in drive and started driving toward Officer Donovan Powell, who was lying on the ground, Officer Powell was struck by the vehicle, but they say he was able to jump out of the way before being run over.
Officers then fired multiple shots at the SUV.
A manhunt ensued, and officers were initially unable to locate Carlos Martinez. He was finally arrested on Friday after a citizen reported seeing him in an alley 73rd and 74th Street near Joliet.
Martinez remained jailed on a $500,000 bond.
What a moron. Thank God the officers got his kid out of the car before the incident. All he had to do was get out and the situation would have been way easier for him. There is probably more to his story.
Thank God the officers are alive. Thank you for your brave service to the community.
