The number of fatalities in California fires is increasing day by day. At least 31 people were killed, over one hundred were injured, and a few hundred were driven out of the wildfires that hit the US state of California.
This is a record number of victims of a fiery epidemic in US history. Previously, the fire with the highest number of deaths was the Los Angeles fire in 1933, when 29 people were killed.
Over 8,000 firefighters are engaged in fighting fires, which are spreading due to strong winds and droughts. There are at least 21 fire at the moment in the area.
And among these sad scenes, a heroic stories occure!
Via Verified Politics: “While California Highway Patrol helicopter pilot Pete Gavitt was flying rescue missions through billowing smoke, he came upon five members of Pepe Tamayo’s family. The sad thing he only had four seats in his chopper.
Tamayo insisted that the rest of his family – his wife, Graciela; their 7-year-old son, Jesse; and her parents, both in their 70s – get in the helicopter while he stayed behind.
“So I told these guys, ‘Please, take my family,’” said an emotional Tamayo in an interview. “I called my daughter, and I told her, mi’ja, if I don’t see you again, remember I love you.”
“I was crying, and my son, he was crying too,” Graciela, his wife, said. “And he was saying, ‘Mom, if dad doesn’t make it, don’t worry. I’m going to take care of you.’”
Pepe waited as the fires closed in on him. Rescue pilots made two more trips before finally finding the man. Once they did, flight officer Whitney Lowe was not about to let him slip through his fingers again.
“I grabbed him right above his left chest on a shirt and said, ‘You’re coming with me,’” Lowe said.
The family’s reunion was an emotional one, but Pepe reaffirmed his decision.
“What else can I do,” he said. “I had to save them first.”
What a heroic gesture. Thanks to people like pilot Pete Gavitt who are making those heroic rescues a lot of people is given another chance to enjoy their life with their loved ones.
But Pepe Tamayo is the real hero! The measure of a man’s heart lies in what he’s willing to sacrifice for his family!
“To be a good father and mother requires that the parents defer many of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. As a consequence of this sacrifice, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character and learn to put into practice the selfless truths taught by the Savior Himself.” James E. Faust.
