Once again Hillary Clinton offered lie after lie during her debate performance against Donald Trump Sunday night.Clinton tried to excuse her political duplicity by spinning a yarn about the first Republican president. After moderator Martha Raddatz mentioned an excerpt of one of Clinton’s Wall Street speeches that was leaked recently in which she said “you need both a public and private position on certain issues,” Clinton blamed Steven Spielberg.
“As I recall that was something I saw about Abraham Lincoln.”
“As I recall that was something I saw about Abraham Lincoln after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg movie called ‘Lincoln,’” Clinton said. “I was making the point that it is hard sometimes to get the Congress to get what you want it to do,” she added.
Trump quickly retorted that Clinton was no “Honest Abe.”
Clinton also lied repeatedly about her use of a private email server and mishandling of classified information. “There has never been anything like this, where emails and you get a subpoena and after getting the subpoena, you delete 33,000 emails and then acid-wash them or bleach them,” Trump said.
“Let me just talk about emails because everything he just said is absolutely false,” said Clinton. Of course, what Trump was saying about the email scandal was largely true. Clinton once again insisted the whole email scandal was merely a mistake. “That was a mistake and I take responsibility — for using a personal email account,” she said.
But Clinton didn’t use a personal email account — she used multiple private email servers — and she used them to transmit classified information. And of course, the fact that many of her aides were granted immunity by the FBI, and that some of them physically destroyed evidence — not to mention the fact that Clinton herself made false exculpatory statements — strongly undermines the notion that any of it could have been a simple mistake.
Clinton also claimed that “there is no evidence that anyone hacked the server I was using and no evidence that anyone can point to at all anyone who says otherwise has no basis.” But the FBI said it is highly likely that unauthorized users did gain access to Clinton’s private servers.
Clinton’s other lies ranged from the purely fantastical to the most transparent. “Russians are hacking into our elections … WikiLeaks is part of that,” Clinton asserted. There is no definitive proof that Russians are trying to hack into U.S. election systems, and there is certainly no evidence whatsoever that Julian Assange and WikiLeaks are in cahoots with Vladimir Putin.
Clinton said that Trump “has … targeted immigrants, African-Americans, Latinos, people with disabilities, Muslims, and others.” However, Trump has not targeted immigrants at all — he has merely pointed out truths about the security threat posed by illegal immigration from Central and South America, and the terrorism threat that is part and parcel of accepting large numbers of Syrian refugees.
Clinton, ever the model feminist, reminded everyone of her husband’s alleged achievements. “I watched my husband take a … deficit and turn it into a … surplus.” The truth is that the only reason Bill Clinton left office with a surplus is because Newt Gingrich and the congressional Republicans stopped him from enacting his desired legislative agenda.
And just as she did in the first debate, Clinton boasted of the apparent success of the Iran deal. “We got the sanctions on Iran then put a lid on the Iranian nuclear program without a shot.” Of course the deal doesn’t stop the Iranians from continuing to enrich uranium or develop nuclear infrastructure, and once the time frame of the deal is complete there is nothing to prevent the Iranians from continuing to develop nuclear capabilities.
